How to Play Shuffleboard

Shuffleboard is played on a long, narrow court with a scoring triangle at each end. Players use cues (long sticks) to slide weighted pucks down the court, aiming to land them in scoring zones while knocking opponents’ pucks out of the way.
  • Players: 2 players (singles) or 4 players (doubles)
  • Equipment: 8 pucks total (4 per color, typically yellow and black), 4 cues
  • Objective: Be the first player or team to reach 15, 21, or 50 points (agree on target score before starting)

Basic Rules

Starting the Game

  • Decide who shoots first with a coin flip or friendly challenge
  • In doubles, teammates stand at opposite ends of the court
  • Players alternate shooting all 4 of their pucks from the same end

Gameplay

  • Players must stay behind the baseline when shooting
  • Pucks must pass the foul line (10-off zone) to be in play
  • Any puck not crossing the foul line is removed from play immediately
  • Players alternate turns until all 8 pucks have been shot
  • After all pucks are played, that round (called a “frame”) is scored

Alternating Ends

  • After each frame is scored, players walk to the opposite end
  • The player or team that scored in the previous frame shoots first
  • Continue alternating ends until someone reaches the winning score

Winning

  • First to reach the agreed target score wins
  • You must win by at least 2 points in competitive play

Scoring

The scoring triangle is divided into sections:

  • 10-off zone (closest to shooter): -10 points
  • 8 zone: 8 points
  • 7 zone: 7 points
  • 10 zone (far tip of triangle): 10 points

Scoring Rules:

  • Only pucks that are completely within a scoring zone count (not touching any lines)
  • Pucks on lines don’t score
  • Only the leading team/player scores in each frame (the difference in points)
  • If both players have pucks in scoring zones, subtract the lower score from the higher
  • Pucks must remain in scoring position when all pucks have been shot to count

Example: You have one puck in the 7 zone and one in the 8 zone (15 points total). Your opponent has one in the 7 zone (7 points). You score 8 points that frame (15 – 7 = 8).

Court Etiquette

  • Wait for both players to be ready before shooting
  • Don’t walk in front of a player preparing to shoot
  • Respect the court—avoid stepping on the playing surface with drinks or food
  • Be honest about scoring—shuffleboard relies on honor and sportsmanship
  • Keep the game moving at a reasonable pace
  • Have fun and keep it friendly!
